MANDATE:

Goal – The primary goal of “Généalogie Timmins Genealogy” aims to develop and maintain a genealogy research centre (in a non-lucrative way)

Objectives –

  1. to create an awareness and appreciation for genealogy in our area
  2. to support our members and all those interested, English, French, and others, to trace their ancestors and discover their history
  3. to promote sharing of resources and the knowledge of our members
  4. to promote a close collaboration with the Timmins Public Library

HISTORY: Following a request by Mr. Rodolphe Labelle in March 2003, the “SociétéFranco-Ontarienne d’Histoire et de Généalogie (SFOHG)” indicated an interest in helping to form a history and genealogy research centre in Timmins. It was suggested that such a venture would work best in partnership with the Timmins Public Library. After many communications and negotiations between Mr Rodolphe Labelle (on behalf of a local group of interested genealogy researchers), Ms. Claudette Millette (President of the SFOHG), and Ms. Judith Heinzen (Head of Public Services, Timmins Public Library) an agreement was reached. The 1st executive of the Timmins Regional Administrative Council of the SFOHG elected June 1st, 2004 comprised of: Rodolphe Labelle (President), Pauline Gauthier (Vice-President), Jeanne Proulx (Secretary), John Gauthier (Treasurer), Claude Poirier (counsellor), Lynn Aubertin (counsellor), and Odette Bisson (counsellor). Following the announcement of the construction of the new Timmins Public Library, Mr. Ross Clausi served as spokesperson for the group in successfully having a genealogy nook established in the construction plans. The Agreement between the Timmins Public Library and the SFOHG-Timmins was signed on the 15th of February 2006. SFOHG was very helpful in providing the group with genealogy research publications and other resources, but, unfortunately, the continued relationship with SFOHG, now RPFO, proved no longer viable. “Généalogie Timmins Genealogy” continues to have an excellent relationship with the Timmins Public Library in promoting and supporting genealogy research.

ROUND TABLE MUTUAL AID:

Round Table sessions are open to the public (no registration required). The sessions will take place on the 1st Thursday of every month starting at 10:00 a.m. (see dates below at the Timmins Public Library.) These drop-in sessions will take place in the genealogy section of the library. As you enter the library, take a right at the information desk and go straight to the back of the room.

Genealogy research can be very interesting, challenging, and rewarding, but it does require a commitment of your time. The round table sessions are not for the purpose of doing research for you, but to teach and guide you on how to do research for yourself. It also provides researchers with an opportunity to share information and offer tips on how to move forward in the event of a snag or a dead end. The library also has an extensive collection of genealogy research books and other resources, so someone at the Round Table should be able to help you on how to make use of the resources. An effort will be made to always have a research co-ordinator from “Généalogie Timmins Genealogy (GTG)” at the sessions. Librarians at the reference desk may also assist when available and needed.
